How to Set Up MFA on Microsoft Account

Body

Once the multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled on your CBC Microsoft account, here's what to expect the first time you sign in.

Currently, there are 3 supported ways to satisfy the MFA requirement:

  • SMS/Text message
  • Automated voice call
  • Microsoft authenticator app

You will need to choose at least one (or more) of these methods in order to be ready for MFA. Note that most students should already have a phone number on their account and thus can skip the setup entirely by choosing "Skip setup" option.

Initial Setup

The first time you sign in after MFA is enabled on your account, you'll see the following screen:

Click "Next". You'll be prompted to install Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. If you would like to do that, click the "Google Play" or "App Store" link depending on your device and follow the prompts to install and set up the Microsoft Authenticator. See this article for additional instructions for Microsoft Authenticator: https://cbc.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/1860/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=169263.

If you prefer to use another authentication method (SMS or voice), click "Set up a different way to sign in". You can also choose to skip the setup by choosing "Skip setup". Note that starting July 1st, MFA will be mandatory so you will not be able to skip it after that date if you don't have at least one MFA option configured.

If you chose to set up a different way, you'll be prompted with this screen. Choose the "Phone" option if you'd like to set up SMS or voice option and follow the prompts to add your phone number.  Note the the "Email" option is only supported for self-service password reset and is not eligible for MFA.

Once you've added and configured the Microsoft Authenticator or a phone number, you are done and ready for MFA.

Adding or Modifying Authentication Methods

If you would like to add, delete or change your authentication methods later, sign in at https://aka.ms/mfasetup. To change, click "Change" next to the method you'd like to change and follow the prompts to update it. To add, click "Add sign-in method", then choose one of the available sign-in methods:
