User Guide for In-Place Upgrade to Windows 10

Preparing for the Upgrade Process

  1. Backup important files by saving them to your network drives (P:\ or M:\).
  2. Please print out and read these instructions.

Upgrading to Windows 10

Note:  This process typically takes 90 to 120 minutes to complete.  To reduce the disruption and help ensure that the process completes successfully, please begin it just prior to leaving work for the day.

  1. Disconnect any USB storage devices (including flash/thumb and external hard drives)
  2. Restart the computer (Important, please do not skip this step).
  3. Click on the Windows button in the bottom-left corner (If your icon does not look like this, please notify the IS HelpDesk before proceeding):
  4. Type “Software Center” in the search bar and click the program to start it.

  5. Click “Operating Systems” on the left side of the window and then “Windows 10 Upgrade” in the center of the window. It may take a minute or two for this to appear.

  6. Click “Install” in the center of the window.

  7. A window will appear asking for confirmation. Click “Install” again to proceed. After a few moments another window will pop up that shows progress of the upgrade process.

    No further action is required. The upgrade process will take some time to finish and the computer may restart several times. Please do not use the computer or turn it off until the upgrade process is complete. The computer will be ready to use when you see “Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to Unlock”.
