Troubleshooting: What do I do if I can't get Proctorio to let me take my test?
The most common issue we hear is from test-takers who tell us this: "Proctorio is asking me for an access code. Do I need one?"
No. Proctorio should never ask you for a password or access code. After your teacher enables Proctorio on an exam, there is no password or access code for you to type in. If you are being prompted to type in a password or access code, it usually means:
- Proctorio is being blocked on your computer,
- you need to update your browser, or
- you need to clear your cache (browsing data).
We'll help you with these steps now.
Step 1: Give Proctorio Permission
- Confirm you are running a supported browser.
- Sign out of Canvas.
- For Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers: [1] Click on the puzzle piece (extensions) icon in the top right corner of the browsing window. [2] Then, click the vertical ellipsis (three dots).
- On the submenu for the Proctorio extension, click the This Can Read and Change Site Data option. From here, click the On All Sites radio button to select.
This ensures that Proctorio can function correctly in your browser.
Step 2: Update your browser
Running an outdated version of your browser can cause issues with extension. Here's how to update it.
With a mouse
- In the upper right corner of the browsing window, click the ellipsis (three dots) to open the menu.
- Click Help, located near the very bottom of the menu.
- Click the About option (About Chrome in Google Chrome or About Microsoft Edge in Microsoft Edge).
- Your browser will let you know whether there are pending updates. Install any updates.
With keyboard shortcuts
- Google Chrome:
- Press Alt + F. Then, press the E key. Finally, press the G key.
- This sequence will open the About screen. Your browser will let you know whether there are pending updates. Install any updates.
- Microsoft Edge:
- Press Alt + F. Then, press the B key. Finally, press the M key.
- This sequence will open the About screen. Your browser will let you know whether there are pending updates. Install any updates.
Step 3: Clear your cache (browsing data)
With a mouse
- Google Chrome:
- Follow the steps in the Clear Cache & Cookies help article from Google.
- Be sure to select the option to delete cached images and files.
- You don't need to delete the cookies. If you choose to delete them, you'll be signed out from any online accounts.
